ISO Standard to increase confidence in ship recycling certification

23 November 2009

An International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard for bodies providing audit and certification of ship recycling management systems will increase the safety of workers and help to protect the environment. The Standard will support the recognition of accredited certification bodies and the acceptance of their certifications on an international basis.

ISO 30003:2009 Ships and marine technology – Ship recycling management systems – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of ship recycling management aims to instil confidence that the certification process has been carried out in a competent, consistent, and reliable manner. Third party audit and certification bodies and those involved in the assessment of management systems for the recycling of ships of all types and sizes, in both international and domestic trade, will use ISO 30003.

ISO 30003:2009 is part of a series of Standards (ISO 30000) on ship recycling management, which promotes the safety of workers and preservation of the environment, and the recovery and reuse of steel and other materials and equipment.

About Standards New Zealand

Standards New Zealand is the operating arm of the Standards Council, and part of New Zealand's standards and conformance infrastructure. Standards New Zealand is an autonomous Crown entity responsible for managing the development and distribution of Standards across a range of sectors nationally.

Standards New Zealand is a self-funded, not-for-profit organisation, relying on revenue primarily from contracts with sponsors to develop Standards, and from sales of Standards publications. Our independence helps us facilitate a cross section of stakeholders' contributions to the development of Standards, and ensure that each Standard meets the needs of end users.
