Collaborative business relationships and web accessibility – two new Standards

8 December 2010

Two new British Standards are available to help organisations to build collaborative business relationships and design accessible websites.

Collaborative business relationships – A framework specification, BS 11000.1:2010, provides a strategic framework to build collaborative relationships with other organisations. The Standard helps organisations to effectively share knowledge, skills, and resources to meet mutual goals. Over time, the Standard can help build trust between an organisation and its partners.

BS 11000.1 addresses the requirements for collaborative relationships to ensure they are effective and deliver enhanced benefit to the stakeholders. Collaboration can enhance competitiveness and performance and help organisations to achieve better cost management, to foster innovation, and to improve time, resource, and risk management.

Web accessibility – Code of practice, BS 8878:2010, will help non-technical professionals to ensure any website that they commission or design is accessible for all. BS 8878 is the first Standard to address the growing challenge of digital inclusion. It provides guidance on how to remove the barriers to inclusion and highlights a simple truth: if accessibility is built-in, it's a win-win for site owners and users.

BS 8878 introduces non-technical professionals to accessibility, usability, and user experience for disabled and older people. It gives guidance on process, rather than on technical and design issues. Both the public and private sector can benefit from this new Standard.

About Standards New Zealand

Standards New Zealand is the operating arm of the Standards Council, and part of New Zealand’s standards and conformance infrastructure. Standards New Zealand is an autonomous Crown entity responsible for managing the development and distribution of Standards across a range of sectors nationally.

Standards New Zealand is a self-funded, not-for-profit organisation, relying on revenue primarily from contracts with sponsors to develop Standards, and from sales of Standards publications. Our independence helps us facilitate a cross section of stakeholders’ contributions to the development of Standards, and ensure that each Standard meets the needs of end users.
