Closer relations with Chinese Standards development organisation

9 November 2007

“The opportunity to host a delegation from China’s key Standards development organisation is another sign of New Zealand’s growing economic relationship with China”, says Debbie Chin, Chief Executive Officer, Standards New Zealand.

Standards New Zealand is hosting a delegation from the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) today, Friday 9 November.

“Standards are vital to ensuring the safety and quality of products, and they play an important role in reducing technical barriers to trade. As New Zealand moves closer towards establishing a free trade agreement with China, Standards will become increasingly important”, says Mrs Chin.

CNIS is a public research institution affiliated with China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. It is a major research and development centre for China’s Standards, charged with the responsibility of developing and pioneering China’s research on standardisation.

Standards New Zealand and the CNIS delegation will discuss a number of topics focusing on promoting greater understanding of standardisation.

Key topics include:

  • Comparing organisational processes and projects
  • the Standards and Conformance infrastructure of both countries
  • the interaction between standards development organisations and regulators
  • product safety Standards in New Zealand and China
  • the development of Standards in new areas of interest.

Standards help all New Zealanders by making life safer and easier. They improve the effectiveness and reliability of many goods and services we use every day.  Standards New Zealand is increasingly working across diverse subject areas, with Standards in health and disability, engineering, sport and recreation, energy efficiency, and fertility services to name a few.
