Public safety management systems – electricity and gas industries – new Standard
Standards New Zealand has published a new Standard, Electricity and gas industries – Safety management systems for public safety, NZS 7901:2008. It provides an overarching safety strategy for the energy assets of suppliers.
Safety management systems (SMS) play an essential role in preventing harm to people and property in the electricity and gas supply industries. NZS 7901 takes a hazard identification and control approach. It does not require all new documentation for a SMS, but provides a framework for existing supplier documentation.
As a result of the Energy Safety Review Bill in 2006, the Electricity Amendment Act and the Gas Amendment Act introduced the added safety net that requires a SMS for electricity distribution systems. A SMS is required for large electricity generating plants, and for gas distribution systems. NZS 7901 is designed to be referenced in the Electricity and Gas regulations as a means of complying with this requirement for a SMS.

Boating safety – revised electrical Standards
The Standard for electrical installations in marinas and on recreational boats, AS/NZS 3004 has been revised. This Standard is now in two parts:
- Electrical installations – Marinas and recreational boats – Marinas, AS/NZS 3004.1:2008: Specifies requirements for electrical installations associated with marinas supplied at low-voltage a.c. supply systems.
- Electrical installations – Marinas and recreational boats – Recreational boats installations, AS/NZS 3004.2:2008: Specifies requirements for electrical installations on small boats.
The Standards supersede Electrical installations – Marinas and pleasure craft at low-voltage, AS/NZS 3004:2002.
The revised Standard is an essential safety reference for marina owners and operators, boat designers, manufacturers, builders, and regulators, dealing with electrical installations on board, or at a marina.
