Prams and strollers – revised safety requirements Standard available now

Standards New Zealand has published Prams and strollers – Safety requirements AS/NZS 2088:2009. This revised Standard includes enhanced requirements and provides manufacturers, authorities, and others, with minimum safety requirements to reduce the likelihood of injury to children.

The Standard has been revised in response to incidents where children have been left unattended, or unrestrained, and other occurrences where strollers have rolled away from carers. New tests have been developed and included to address:

  • stability against overbalancing
  • small parts
  • hazardous gaps and openings
  • dynamic strength of locking and latching devices
  • harness configuration.

New brake pad testing Standard provides all-in-one test

A new ISO Standard is now available for testing brake pads to ensure drivers are getting the best safety and performance from their braking system.

One of the main difficulties truck and trailer manufacturers face is costly, time-consuming, and multiple testing. These costs would be drastically reduced if the brake pad could be tested once and the safety results accepted in all markets.

Trampoline safety this summer

In the 3-year-period May 2006 to April 2009, 161 children were admitted to Starship Children's Health following a trampoline-related injury. Admissions revealed that almost half of the injuries were to children 5 to 9 years old, and injury patterns were consistently high during the summer months and school holidays.

Bikes for children

We tested nine children's bikes of all sizes against the mandatory New Zealand safety Standard.

Safety should be top of mind when you're choosing a child's bike. While none of the bikes we tested was perfect, some were certainly better than others.
