How to stay safe when using quad bikes on farms – new guidelines

Issue 25 – March 2011

The Department of Labour has released Guidelines for the safe use of quad bikes on farms. The guidelines support the Department of Labour's harm reduction campaign to reduce the unacceptably high rate of farm accidents involving quad bikes.

Every year, 850 people are injured on farms while riding quad bikes. Five die. This is a toll we must reduce. These guidelines provide farmers, farm workers, and contractors with practical advice about how to stay safe when using a quad bike for work.

Exposure to radiation – new Standard will improve protection of workers

Issue 25 – March 2011

A new ISO Standard will help optimise individual monitoring and protection of workers exposed to radiation. It will also provide the technical basis for reinforcing regulation in this field worldwide. The application of Radiation protection – Dose assessment for the monitoring of workers for internal radiation exposure ISO 27048:2011 will contribute to more reliable and consistent results when measuring internal doses of radioactive substances.

AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 High visibility safety garments – Garments for high risk applications

Specifies high visibility safety garment requirements for use in high risk applications without reference to particular types or styles. This has been done so as to give the designer as much flexibility as possible in selecting a suitable garment design to meet differing needs as regards weather conditions, type of work and the like, and to be innovative in devising means of encouraging users to wear the garments properly.
