W3C Web services standards approved as ISO/IEC Standards

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the joint technical committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information Technology recently announced formal approval of a package of W3C Web Services technologies as ISO/IEC Standards. As International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards, these widely deployed technologies now benefit from formal recognition from national bodies, which will promote interoperability and reduce market fragmentation, benefiting all users.

C++ programming language – updated ISO/IEC Standard

C++, one of the most popular programming languages used in everything from web browsers to 3D video games, has been updated and published as Information technology – Programming languages – C++, ISO/IEC 14882:2011. ISO/IEC 14882 defines the programming language and specifies requirements for implementation. Also known as C++11, this is the first major revision of the Standard since 1998.

Conformity assessment – 90 international experts attend ISO Standards meeting

More than 90 international experts participated in an ISO Standards meeting on 5 October 2011 in Switzerland on conformity assessment – the name given to the processes that are used to demonstrate that a product, service, management system, person, or organisation meets specified requirements, such as those of Standards. Conformity assessment is an important component of world trade and global supply chains, and provides support for government regulation.

Hightech sector defies tough market conditions – Technology Innovation Network (TIN) 100 Report

Industrial Research Limited Chief Executive Shaun Coffey says the recently published 2011 Technology Innovation Network (TIN) 100 Report shows the ability of New Zealand's top hightech companies to prosper despite challenging market conditions. 'The continued growth in revenue of TIN 100 companies is one indicator of a healthy, dynamic manufacturing sector and shows that investment in technology can insulate firms to an extent from unfavourable macro-economic conditions,' says Coffey.

NEW JOINT STANDARD

AS/NZS 1015:2011 Records management – Physical storage

Establishes voluntary guidelines for the storage of non-current physical records. Storage refers to the records management function of storing physical records, which are no longer in active use, for future retrieval and preservation. Within this context, this Standard addresses issues relating to systems, processes, facilities, equipment and devices used for storing records that are no longer in current use. This Standard covers all types of storage media, e.g. paper, audio visual material, micro-forms and machine readable formats, but excludes electronic records on networks, hard-drives or in data centres.
