Amendment clarifies Standard for open-waters life jackets

Issue 33 – November 2011

Standards New Zealand has published Amendment 1 to NZS 5823:2005 Specification for buoyancy aids and marine safety harnesses and lines. An anomaly in clause 401.12.1 (Marking: General requirements) of NZS 5823 was drawn to the attention of Standards New Zealand by a supplier of open-waters life jackets. The anomaly created confusion over how these products should be labelled, which meant a correction amendment was required.

Vehicle pedestrian impact – new ISO testing Standard to improve pedestrian safety

An ISO Standard that defines a new crash test method will help to reduce pedestrian leg injuries caused by dangerous car design. Road vehicles – Pedestrian protection – Impact test method for pedestrian thigh, leg, and knee ISO 11096:2011provides a test method to assess the protection of an adult pedestrian, by simulating the leg-impact conditions sustained during the car-to-pedestrian crash.

Improving escalator safety – new ISO Technical Specification

A new ISO Technical Specification will help to protect users and non-users of escalators from the effects of falling, shearing, crushing, or abrasion, or other injuries. Safety requirements for escalators and moving walks – Part 1: Global essential safety requirements (GESR) ISO/TS 25740-1:2011 specifies safety requirements for escalators and moving walks.

Amendment 1:2011 to NZS 5823:2005 Specification for buoyancy aids and marine safety harnesses and lines

This correction amendment to clause 401.12.1 (a) of NZS 5823:2005 removes ambiguity in the labelling requirements for open waters life jackets, and clarifies that open waters life jackets are intended to hold an unconscious wearer's head above water in most conditions.
