Rapid rise in high-speed rail – new Worldwatch research

As interest in high-speed rail (HSR) surges around the world, the number of countries running these trains is expected to nearly double over the next few years, according to new research by the Worldwatch Institute for Vital Signs Online. By 2014, high-speed trains will be operating in nearly 24 countries, including China, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the United States, up from only 14 countries today. The increase in HSR is due largely to its reliability and ability to cover vast geographic distances in a short time, to investments aimed at connecting once-isolated regions, and to the diminishing appeal of air travel, which is becoming more cumbersome because of security concerns.

Comments: NZS 5433:2007 provides manufacturers, distributors, and transporters of dangerous goods with information such as packing instructions, labeling, segregation, and other requirements to ensure the safe transport of dangerous goods by road and rail. Work is underway to update the Standard with the latest changes published by the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UNRTDG), and changes introduced under the Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005 (amended in 2010 and 2011) and the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. A committee of technical experts has reviewed the public comments received on the draft revised Standard, and the final version is being prepared for publication in early 2012.
