Fire hydrant Standard revision and draft Amendment to protect firefighters and communities
A new version of Fire hydrant systems for buildings, NZS 4510:2008 (superseding NZS 4510:1998) was published in April. An Amendment is also underway to ensure the Standard is suitable for referencing in the Compliance Documents to the New Zealand Building Code.
‘Important changes to the 1998 Standard help users stay up to date with the latest requirements for fire service and engineering best practices,’ says Chris Mak, committee Chair and Sprinkler Certification Manager at Aon New Zealand Ltd. ‘Sprinklers reduce the overall fire risk in buildings and sprinkler-protected buildings place less demand on hydrant systems than buildings without sprinklers. The hydrant requirements have been relaxed, where a sprinkler system is installed in the building.’

Draft Amendment available for public comment
An Amendment to NZS 4510:2008 is underway, to enable the Standard to be incorporated by reference in the Acceptable Solution of the Fire Safety Compliance Document for Clause C1 to C4 of the New Zealand Building Code. Draft Amendment 1, DZ 4510, is availiable for public comment.
The closing date is 25 November 2008. The amendment is expected to be published by February 2009.
