Carbon footprint Standard moves forward – New Zealand contributes to the development of product category rules

The substantial international involvement and response to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) draft 'Carbon footprint of products' Standard ISO 14067 (expected in 2011) is a clear sign of the growing interest of companies worldwide on greenhouse gas quantification.

Carbon footprint (CFP) refers to the impact we have on the environment. It involves the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) associated with a company, event, activity, or the life cycle of a product or service. CFP is therefore a powerful tool for de-carbonising the product supply chain.

Comments: The P6806 committee met to discuss the public comments received on the draft Standard. A further meeting was held in October and final editing is now underway before ballot occurs. Publication is now expected in January 2010.

Comments: Voting on the final version is completed and the Standard is being prepared for publication early in 2010. This will be complemented by a series of technical seminars in February 2010 for users of the Standard. The seminars are being organised by the NZ Wind Energy Association and the NZ Acoustical Society. Details of the seminars will be announced in January 2010.
