Fire sprinkler systems in sleeping occupancies – revised Standard soon to be published
Standards New Zealand will soon publish a revised Standard NZS 4515 Fire sprinkler systems for life safety in sleeping occupancies (up to 2000 m2). Sprinkler systems that comply with NZS 4515 provide high levels of life and property protection; reduce risk to occupants; and minimise fire and smoke damage to property.
The revised NZS 4515 places a greater emphasis on the life safety characteristics of sprinkler systems, versus their property protection characteristics. The Standard provides building owners, specifiers, users, manufacturers, suppliers, plumbers, installers, and maintenance persons with requirements to professionally design, install, and maintain a life safety sprinkler system for a building used solely as a sleeping occupancy.

[more]Helping people escape from fires in buildings – new ISO report
A new ISO technical report on how people behave when fire breaks out will help in designing safer buildings that make escape easier and reduce exposure to flames and heat. Fire-safety engineering – Technical information on methods for evaluating behaviour and movement of people ISO/TR 16738:2009 provides information on the engineering methods available for evacuation strategies and life safety aspects when designing buildings.
'The basis of life-safety design consists of provisions for the protection of occupants from fire exposure and provision for means of escape,' says David Purser, convenor and project leader of the working group that developed the technical report. 'ISO/TR 16738:2009 will be useful for building design professionals, regulators, and fire safety professionals.'

This draft document is based on the equivalent Australian Standards, AS 1905.1:2005 Components for the protection of openings in fire-resistant walls – Fire-resistant doorsets and AS 6905:2007 Smoke doors. The draft provides manufacturers, suppliers, and installers with the prescriptive requirements for the specification, construction, installation, testing, and maintenance of fire-resistant doorsets and smoke-control doors designed to protect the openings in walls and elements of construction that are required to resist the passage of fire or smoke.
